David O'Hara writes for January aimZine

David O'Hara, Founder of Blackthorn Focus, appears again in the January edition of aimZine, the online magazine for the AIM community.

For an article titled '2010 Aspirations', David contacted eight experts on London's junior market to ask what they would like to see change in 2010. Blackthorn Focus would like to thank all those people for sharing their insights. Thanks to:

Kelly Gardiner, Hybridan
Henry Harrison-Topham, Managing Director, Abchurch Communications
Paul Parker, Investment Manager, Collins Stewart Wealth Management
Chris Searle, Partner, Corporate Finance, BDO
Shane Smith, CEO, IIR Group, and PSQ Analytics
Marcus Stuttard, Head of AIM, London Stock Exchange
Tony Vine-Lott, Director, Tax-Incentivised Savings Association (TISA)
Tim Ward, Chief Executive, Quoted Companies Alliance

David O'Hara's piece focused on the perceived lack of engagement from institutional investors in the AIM market. "This is an important issue going into 2010" said O'Hara. "A number of AIM companies are failing to interact properly with the investment community and operate as a listed company should. This does a disservice to their investors and by damaging the reputation of the junior market affects all other AIM-listed companies. Improvements in governance and corporate behaviour could be brought about by investors much faster than any regulation would manage."

David O'Hara joins Network for Sustainable Financial Markets

David O'Hara, Founder of Blackthorn Focus has joined the Network for Sustainable Financial Markets, the finance sector professionals, academics and others who have an active interest in long-term investing.

"I am delighted to join the NSFM" said O'Hara. "The horrible experience of the last two years has shown we cannot just leave markets to run unfettered. What is required is a detailed and well-considered regulatory framework and an educated population of practitioners."

Blackthorn Focus fully supports the works of the Network. "I look forward to supporting the Network's initiatives in the future, increasing understanding among all of us on how markets work and the steps that can be taken to help steer them towards providing solutions for the greater good" added O'Hara.

David O'Hara writes for December aimZine

Blackthorn Focus' Founder David O'Hara appears again this month in aimZine, the online magazine for the AIM community.

In his article Private Investor Power, David discusses the phenomenon of increased private investor activity within the AIM market.

"There is currently a two-tier investment market within the UK", says Mr O'Hara. "It is not just Blackthorn Focus that sees this, recent comments from Gavin Oldham, CEO of share plc, in the Roundtable Discussion Solutions for Smallcap Markets echo this. Retail investors play a huge role in the market but struggle to get access to research and company executives. On AIM, this influence is manifesting itself with a number of recent board appointments and I expect more to follow."

Solutions for Smallcap Markets published

Solutions for Smallcap Markets, a publication of the proceedings of the recent Blackthorn Focus roundtable discussion is published today.

"I am delighted with Blackthorn Focus' first publication" said David O'Hara, Founder of Blackthorn Focus. "There are a number of issues raised by this forum which many market participants will not have fully appreciated until now. This publication goes a long way to filling gaps within market understanding. Thank-you to all participants."

David O'Hara writes in November aimZine

David O'Hara, Founder of Blackthorn Focus, is delighted to appear again in aimZine, the online magazine for the AIM community. In this article, David examined the size of trades on two of AIM's more liquid companies in an attempt to gauge the significance of retail investors' role in London's junior market.

"I am delighted aimZine have put this piece of analysis in front of their readership. The role private investors play in providing liquidity to the AIM market is substantial. AIM market participants, advisors and policymakers must award the retail investor appropriate consideration at all times."

"Blackthorn Focus looks forward to continuing to work with aimZine."

David O'Hara on Selftrade SIPPex

David O'Hara, Founder of Blackthorn Focus, was interviewed at the recent Selftrade SIPPex event. See the video here.

"SIPPs are a superb product enabling investors to take charge of their own long-term financial security" says Mr O'Hara. "I was previously unaware how many tax advantages there are of investing via a SIPP and the different assets that can be held there. Congratulations to Selftrade for putting on this event. The panel assembled was first class."

Blackthorn Focus believes tax-incentivised investment is vital for personal finance and the functioning of smallcap equity markets. "As explained at the Selftrade SIPPex event, shares in AIM-listed companies can be held in a SIPP, while they remain forbidden from ISAs. This aberration undermines liquidity in the UK smallcap market."

Roundtable Discussion: a great success

On Thursday 10th September, Blackthorn Focus' first major event Solutions for Smallcap Markets took place at the offices of BDO Stoy Hayward on Baker Street.

Blackthorn Focus would like to thank all participants for sharing their time, insight and perspectives. We look forward to being able to distribute the proceedings of this discussion among a wider audience.

David O'Hara writes in September aimZine

aimZine, the online magazine dedicated to investors in London's junior market, this month carries an opinion piece 'It's Time to Regulate Research' from Blackthorn Focus founder, David O'Hara.

We believe aimZine fills an important niche within investment media and look forward to working with the editorial team at aimZine again in the future.
